“I feel privileged to have been invited to Bihar,” said the celebrated bhajan singer Anup Jalota, who performed at the SK Memorial Hall here on Tuesday as part of Bihar Diwas celebrations to mark the 99th year of Bihar’ foundation.

“There is great hunger for spiritual music in Bihar. I get immense affection from the people of Bihar. I try to come to Bihar whenever I get a chance,” said Jalota.

Asked whether popularity of spiritual music has witnessed a decline in recent times, Jalota said: “Spiritual music will never see a decline in demand. Bhajan soothes the soul and is directly connected to the heart. It is an inseparable part of human life.”

Noted vocalist of Patiala gharana, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, who also performed here on Tuesday, said, “I have come to Bihar after a gap of 15 years. Bihar has a rich cultural heritage, which is getting revived after a long period.” Chakrabarty performed at the Indira Gandhi Planetarium here.

However, he feels that passion for classical music in Bihar has taken a downswing recently: “About 25 years ago, night-long classical performances would take place during Durga Puja. But the yearning for classical music is much less in the state today.”

Chakrabarty, who has been awarded Sangeet Natak Akademi award and also Padmashri, said, “An exclusive national channel for classical music is likely to be launched by the end of this year. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has given an assurance to this effect to the representatives of All India Music Group.”

Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, the celebrated santoor player, also performed at the SK Memorial hall on Tuesday.

As the sun set on March 22 in the backdrop of heavily illuminated and richly decorated Gandhi Maidan in Patna, Bihar entered into the cen-tenary year of its creation. A hundred bunches of colourful balloons were released from various corners of the sprawling ground to mark the historic event. And a little earlier, 99 tiny (earthen lamps) were floated in the specially crafted water body.

On Tuesday, Bihar completed 99 years of its notification as a separate state and entered into its hundredth year. To mark the occasion, history and heritage of Bihar were splashed on the canvas of the historic Gandhi Maidan where a huge crowd had gathered to be part of this historic mo-ment. Chief minister Nitish Kumar, who is credited with conceiving the idea of holding the Bihar Diwas celebrations not only in the state but across the world, called upon them to help Bihar progress with honest commitment and fight for its rights united.

‘Rhythm of Bihar’ and ‘Bihar Gaurav Gaan’, songs on the state’s glory, will set the tone and tenor for inauguration of Bihar Diwas celebrations at the historic Gandhi Maidan here on Tuesday evening.

With the CM floating 99 diyas in the temporarily built pond at the ground, symbolising the 99th year of Bihar’s foundation, year-long festivities will kick-off around the globe only to culminate in 2012.

CM Nitish Kumar, accompanied by HRD minister P K Sahi and principal secretary Anjani Kumar Singh, took a brief overview of the preparations made at Gandhi Maidan on Monday after inaugurating a book fair.

As many as 10 books on Bihar, including a 200-page illustration on monuments of Bihar and a children’s book ‘Atkan-Matkan’ are likely to be released by the CM.

Soothing to the eyes are stylistically carved sculptures and enamouring paintings displayed at the ground by talented artists from not only Chennai and Mumbai but also Switzerland, UK and Holland. A portrait of Mauryan king Ashoka by Rajat Ghosh, a renowned artist, looks intriguing.

A “Vyanjan mela”, to tickle the taste buds of the public, will also kick off here, serving special Bihari cuisine.

Besides enjoying Maithili and Bhojpuri folk songs at the elaborately built stage here, Patnaites can also enjoy a national volleyball championship to begin here on March 22. As many as 14 teams are participating in it, including five women’s teams.

A mobile exhibition depicting the five years of Bihar’s progress and a CD containing songs on Bihar’s glory have been made by the state information and public relations department. Copies of the CD would be sent to schools, cultural centres, TV channels and jails for popularising these songs among the masses.

An array of artistes, including santoor player Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma and ghazal singer Anup Jalota, will perform at the S K Memorial Hall. While violin and classical singing event will be held at the planetarium, sufi and folk song programme has been planned at Rabindra Bhawan. Bal Natya Mahotsav and Kavi sammelan will be held at Kalidas Rangalaya and L N Mishra Institute respectively on the inaugural day.

In course of celebrations across the state, cleanliness drive will be undertaken through ‘shramdaan’ at village level, followed by cultural programmes. Kavi sammelan, street plays, health camps, marathons and sports activities will be held at all the districts. Events will also be held at the university, college and school levels as well.

Buildings, both private and government, have been tastefully decorated and illuminated, including the state legislature complex, secretariat buildings and local police stations. President Pratibha Singh Patil will inaugurate the year-long centenary celebration of the Bihar Vidhan Parishad on Tuesday.

PATNA: There’s good news for Buddhist pilgrims visiting Rajgir and Nalanda – a park dedicated to the historic meeting between Buddha and Maha Kassapa will be set up soon at Silao, a short distance from here, on way to Rajgir. While its site will be inaugurated on Friday, the designing and construction will take some time.

Maha Kassapa, from Magadh region, was a key disciple of Buddha, who became patriarch of the Sangha after the Mahaparinirvana. He presided over the first Buddhist council at Rajgriha (now Rajgir).

Pali literature mentions that the meeting between the two took place between Rajgriha and Nalanda. In 1934, an 8th century stone sculpture was discovered that bore an inscription mentioning this meeting. Over a period of time though, all information about this discovery was lost, except for the picture and inscription translation, which were published in the Epigraphica Indica Vol XXV.

With the help of information from this book, local amateur archaeologist Deepak Anand and Silao people made efforts to rediscover this stone sculpture. It was finally found lying in one of the storerooms of a temple in Silao.

Following a petition by Silao villagers, Nalanda DM has now taken the lead in this ambitious plan to create a Maha Kassapa Park. This will be a heritage park on Buddhist theme, dedicated to life and works of Maha Kassapa. Experienced architects would be employed for its design, said an official.

The department of Buddhist studies, Nava Nalanda Mahavihara (NNM), an autonomous university, in the past, worked on the legacies of Sariputta and Maha Moggallana by organising walks to commemorate their parinirvana. NNM is now planning to develop a calendar of events to celebrate the legacy of these three luminaries of Magadh: Sariputta, Maha Moggallana and Maha Kassapa.
